Value investing has endured for nearly a century, yet its recent underperformance has led many investors to question whether the value premium still exists. In this presentation, Kevin Grogan, CIO of Systematic Strategies at Focus Partners Wealth, examines the historical evidence behind value investing in the U.S. and internationally, explores why value has historically earned a premium, and addresses the challenges it has faced since 2010.
Participants will gain perspective on whether recent results represent a structural shift or simply another chapter in value’s long and cyclical history, and how systematic value strategies can fit within a diversified portfolio today.
Kevin Grogan is Chief Investment Officer of Systematic Strategies for Focus Partners, which is comprised of Focus Partners Wealth and Focus Partners Advisor Solutions. And while it sounds like his job is all about the numbers, what he likes most about his role is the opportunity for him to collaborate every day with advisors, clients and prospects, helping others better understand the complicated concepts that will have a tangible effect on their financial lives. He is a member of the firm’s Investment Policy Committee and helps lead the firm’s investment strategy, portfolio management and fixed income teams.
Kevin has co-authored three books. His most recent book, “Your Complete Guide to a Successful & Secure Retirement” with Larry Swedroe, was named by The Wall Street Journal as the best retirement book of 2019. His first book was “The Only Guide You’ll Ever Need for the Right Financial Plan,” co-authored with Larry Swedroe and Tiya Lim, and his second book was “Reducing the Risk of Black Swans: Using the Science of Investing to Capture Returns with Less Volatility,” co-authored with Larry Swedroe. He has also published an article in the Journal of Investing.
Kevin began his career at Focus in 2007. He holds a bachelor’s of science in finance from Missouri State University in Springfield and an MBA from Saint Louis University. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst® charterholder and a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional.
Kevin lives in St. Louis with his wife Julie and son Ryan.

He practiced commercial law for 22 years, then transitioned to 15 years advanced analytics consulting for Fortune 1000 companies and the US Intelligence Community. Kevin will show how buying at discounts from opening price may increase results and reduce volatility. He will also discuss how AI and data science look at the markets today, refresh you on trailing stop methods to preserve gains, and the tactic of waiting to buy until price hits a discount seems intuitive, but what is the best discount?
– if you buy too soon, the price may fall more. If you wait too long, the price may go back up and you end up buying high. Historic data discloses optimal values historically available when buying at discounts for many equities.
